Who Wants To Be A Superhero?

New York Comic Con wasn't all nerds in costumes... oh wait... yes it was. The Sci Fi Channel's Who Wants To Be A Superhero? (hosted and judged by the comic god among men, Stan Lee) was holding auditions for its second season, so we got our old friend Nitro G and Fat Momma from season one to help us out with interviewing some of the wacky and wondrous superhero hopefuls. We also got our host Blair (who's a huge comic book collector) to interview Stan Lee once again (see G-Hole episode 6). To Blair's delight, Stan remembered him and dubbed him "Loquacious Man." Fitting.

MTV Games Goes to New York Comic Con!

The second annual New York Comic Convention was held over the past weekend at the Jacob Javits Center, and we here at MTV Games decided to scope out the scene and give you full coverage of freaks, geeks and games. Throughout the weekend, we checked out the new Halo ActionClix, the Marvel Trading Card Game, the Stargate Online Trading Card Game as well as the Xbox 360 version of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles game. We also got a sneak peak at The Darkness game inspired by the Marc Silvestri comic as well as the Fantastic Four title based on the summer sequel Rise of the Silver Surfer. All of this and more will be featured in our upcoming G-Hole show, but until then, take a look at some of the photos we took after the jump... Enjoy!

Meet The Pac-mans... I mean Capmans

Straight off the floor of New York Comic Con 2007 comes the awesomest purchase ever. Meet Mr. and Mrs. Capman. The lovely couple are the creation of artist Keith Poon and were available in very limited runs in blue (only 300 pieces at the Toy Qube booth) and pink (only 150 pieces exclusive to Wizard’s booth) for $55 and $60, respectively. The vinyls are two parts: The ghosts (which glow) on top and the Pacs on the bottom.

Spider-Man 3 Revealed

Activision recently unveiled Spider-Man 3 at an event in San Francisco. And when words fail ...

Aside from the standard exploration, rescue, and fighting bits, players will get to play as Peter Parker and Spider-Man. As Spider-Man, there will be two different costumes available: the traditional red-and-blue and the newer, more sinister black costume.

The thing Activision isn't showing in this gameplay trailer is how it's handling the game's cinematic bits. Certain scenes in the trailer (notably, the ones where Peter Parker is fighting the Green Goblin, spinning through the air to avoid a series of cars hurled at him, and the fight against the Sandman) will require players to make a series of button presses to ensure Spider-Man performs an action successfully. During these moments (and game fans will recognize them as being similar to the ones in Sega's adventure Shenmue), the game flashes the correct button input on screen. So, for example, when the game tells you to press the "A" button to smash Sandman in his mush, you better do it—or suffer, Spidey.

Sony to Europe: Get Bent

When the PlayStation 3 releases in Europe on March 23, game fans will get a unique surprise. Certain innards, seen in the Japanese and North American PlayStation 3's will be missing from the European versions.

Specifically, Sony won't be including a PlayStation 2 emotion chip in with the European PlayStation 3s. Which means, simply, the system will have to rely on software for its backward compatibility.

In short: ""The backwards compatibility is not going to be as good as the U.S. and Japan models," a Sony spokesman told Reuters news service.

Ostensibly, the changes were made to reduce the PlayStation 3's manufacturing costs. And the grand savings, passed on to consumers, will be exactly $0. European game fans will be paying roughly as much as their Japanese and American counterparts for a console that's decidedly watered-down.

That Crazy Fred, The One With the Dead Head

Game critics are such bitter, jaded people that it's oftentimes advisable, upon their death, to see if their coal-black hearts have compacted under all surliness and ill-will and, with the strength of time and pressure, formed valuable diamonds.

So it's the rare promotional trailer that manages to transform a game with a cute title into something that a critic can't wait to play.  Dead Head Fred's trailer, without the tiniest bit of gameplay footage, should win over even the most cancerous of souls...

The Fable That is Fable 2

Fable was one of the most hyped video games of all time. Its creator Peter Molyneux gave tons of interviews about the ambitious game (initially codenamed Project: Ego), telling game fans about all the things he wanted to put in the game.

When it was finally released, Fable for the Xbox turned out to be a brilliant RPG. But it didn't have everything Molyneux spoke about; a lot had to be cut because the technology didn't allow it, or there simply wasn't time in the development schedule.

Now, Microsoft and Molyneux are planning the debut of Fable 2, and things are entirely different this time around. Little, if any, information has been published about the game.

Things are about to change. At this year's Game Developer's Conference, held in San Francisco in early March, Peter Molyneux is going to give a speech about the innovations in his new game.

"Plus, Peter Molyneux has promised to reveal a totally unexpected feature in Fable 2," the GDC's Web site says.

Now that's some excellent hype...

 

Games GAYdar

The wacky pranksters at Games Radar at it again... this time compiling a list of five game characters that might, barring actual evidence, be homosexual.

Games Radar's pundit (a certain someone who might be a little obsessed with the off-hours activities of imaginary characters) writes this about Final Fantasy XII's protagonist, "A picture speaks a thousand words and the image below of Final Fantasy XII's hero shouts in an effeminate Hollywood stylist kind of way: 'I AM SOOOOO GAY.' Vaan is also good at pick pocketing and wants to be a sky pirate. He's all kinds of gay. Gay, gay, gay."

Radar's other suspects include Marcus Fenix from Gears of War and Frank West from Dead Rising.

 

Crackdown Annoyance #1 (The Only One)

Crackdown is pretty great. It’s so great, that it’s kept me from sending my Xbox to get it’s DVD drive repaired for about a week now. It’s one of those games that comes along –- similar to some of the XBLA games -- that are just fun. The game is fairly devoid of a plot, but for some reason I’m  okay with that, possibly because shooting things with the homing rocket launcher is so satisfying that it makes up for the short and mostly unsatisfying ending. Either way, now that the best Xbox sandbox game is available to the general public I can share that fun with everyone on my friends list. My first attempt, however did not go so well...

Snowshi

Snowshi is the work of Jennifer Park, a very talented snow artist and video game fan. For the record, the sculpture took an hour to make, and then an hour to color...

"I did it for humanity," Park says. "For everyone who's ever wanted to make a Yoshi out of snow. And mostly because I was bored and thought it would kill some time."
